Too much trouble to rely on a third-party for remote-maintenance on industrial machines within your organization? Rather manage it yourself? MDE-Automation thought so too. IXON-cloud is a great platform for remote-maintenance and key insights of machines and its processes via VPN connection. But expansion comes at the cost of a subscription, hardware is already chosen for you. It's imaginable that you'd want your own configuration and ability to expand your platform both hardware & software-wise in the future. That's where my solution comes in. Your own IoT-platform build with security, expandiblity and modulairity at its core.
It consists of 4 main software-components:
Web-app: Frontend here the user logs in and manages its machines.
API: Manages all requests from the frontend as well as requests from machines that are connected to VPN-server. Sets up machine specific HTTPS endpoints via reverse proxy-server.
VPN-service: Runs on user's laptop and starts a point-to-point VPN connection to the machine that the user specified in the web-app.
Autoconnect-service: Runs on the machines upon boot, which automatically connects to VPN server upon internet availibility.
